Tattersall's Tiara - 1400m, Eagle Farm R7

The final Group 1 of the season is upon us, and we’ve been given a field worthy of the honour. You’d think every set of connections is approaching the race with a quiet confidence that they could be in the finish, with the right run.

Two fillies control the market, looking to add another Group 1 for their age group against the older horses. So far this season, the three-year-old’s have won seven Group 1s plus The Everest in Group 1 races up to 1400m.

Opal Ridge is the favourite, largely due to a friendly barrier draw of six compared to Ruthless Dame in 19. Ruthless Dame has the runs on the board this prep, having won the Sangster, run second in the Surround, and finishing an eye-catching fifth in the Stradbroke. Opal Ridge on the other hand is testing herself at the highest level for the first time, but took the track record at Scone two back, and was the victim of a poor ride last time out.

John Allen will need to give Ruthless Dame a peach of a ride from out wide, but if he can find some cover early in the race and clear running late, she’s the one to beat.

Foxy Frida is simply airborne, taking all before her at the tier below and deserving of her Group 1 shot now. Chain of Lightning has been running well without looking like winning but they still need to get the recipe right – a quiet ride over 1400m is her go. Chaillot is such a devastating fresh horse, and she was great behind Think About It in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but they might have been better waiting for this instead.

Comrade Rosa has won four of her last five, and has improved out of sight this year, but is still on the up. Palaisipan shouldn’t be forgotten either, after a typically honest run in the Stradbroke. The Waller pair of Kiku and Roots are certainly capable on their day, albeit giving the impression that a Group 1 win might just be a bridge too far.

W.J. Healy Stakes - 1200m, Eagle Farm R8

The Healy Stakes shapes up as a really nice race, with a few key sprinters of proven class, and some progressive horses looking to measure up.

Big Parade, Prince of Boom and Quantico are at the top of the weights, conceding 3-5kg’s to the rest of the field, and all three are in single figures given the proven commodities that they are.

Prince of Boom has put together an excellent autumn/winter with two big wins and two competitive runs in a high class races. He treated his rivals with contempt last time out, but he steps up in grade here and has to carry 60kg’s. He won’t have it all his own way.

Prince of Boom likes to lead in his races, but Big Parade wants to be right up on the speed too. He hasn’t raced in over a year, but has had two trials to prepare for this, and the last time he was first-up ran second in the Group 1 Galaxy. If he’s here to run at his best, he’s arguably the one to beat.

Quantico jumped favourite against Prince of Boom three weeks ago at Doomben, but never really got into the race and was beaten five lengths by the runaway leader. A quieter ride and a little weight advantage might be enough to turn the tables.

King Kapa has really come of age in the last six months, with five wins while progressing from Class 2 through to Listed level. This is his toughest test, but it’s easy to see him measuring up. The Big Goodbye is ever consistent and will make his presence felt. Emerald Kingdom is perhaps a bit long in the tooth to beat all of them these days.

The scratching of Big Parade takes away a key rival for Prince of Boom, but also some company on the pace, which should make it an easier task.

Tattersall's Cup - 2400m, Eagle Farm R3

The Tatt’s Cup for the stayers brings together a small field comprised mostly of battleaxes that haven’t won in a while. One of them gets a chance to shine here, and outstay the rest.

Luncies has become one of the more renowned non-winners we’ve seen, giving off Tom Melbourne vibes with a series of seconds, having not tasted victory since May 2021. He’s finished second eight times since then, including five times this season, but surely must take his chance here. He’s got the best recent staying form behind the best horse in Without A Fight, but are punters going to jump in at even money?

London Banker won this race last year, showed some form with a placing in the Ipswich Cup last week, and presents here a fit horse on the back-up. Spirit Ridge is an honest veteran that is rarely far away, and gets in with a very winnable weight of 55kg – he once had to carry 58kg’s in the Metropolitan. Young Werther is still stuck on the one win, but does have four Group 1 placings to his name.

The Mediterranean is the mostly lightly raced horse in the field, having only had 11 starts. He is third up here after 19 months off, and put in a brave performance behind two good ones in the Winter Cup last start. He seems ready, and looks a logical danger to the favourite.

Tattersall's Gold Crown - 2137m, Eagle Farm R6

The Gold Crown for mares over the interesting 2137m distance looks a race in two, with the hardy Chris Waller mare Thalassophile and Waterhouse/Bott import Osmose to fight out favouritism.

It’s hard to believe Thalassophile is still only four. She’s had 11 runs since November, and that came after a 10 run campaign through the autumn and winter last year. She must be the fittest horse in Australia, is a Group winner already, and is coming off an excellent run behind Foxy Frida last start. She’ll go back from a wide draw and try to reel them in, and the scratching of Osmose has made this a far easier task.

Pretty Amazing might be looking for a bit further now, but is an unknown at this distance range having only had one start beyond 1800m. Princess Rhaenys is certainly looking for a longer trip after three very good mile runs, and is the one most likely to upset the applecart.

Tattersall's Mile - 1600m, Eagle Farm R5

The Tatt’s Mile might be the toughest race of the day, likely to be made tougher if Osmose runs in the Gold Crown instead. Osmose is the fresh horse on the scene, having had three starts in Australia after seven races in France as a younger filly, and if she’s here, she’s on top.

In a field where it’s hard to line some of these up, there’s not much wrong with Renouf’s form. It was a hot Class 6 that she contested here a month ago – Antino beat her by three lengths, and you’d back him to beat this field by at least that; Blaze A Trail was second there, and he came out for a close third in a good race last week.

Before that, Renouf split Essonne and the well performed Tycoon Evie when running second in the Silk Stocking, and her 10th of 11 here in April was in an on-speed race where she was out the back. 1600m is her biggest query given she’s never stretched out this far.

This is a field of very inconsistent types. Character is a handy horse that mixes his form. Finepoint is a good mare having a bad run, but pushing forward from a good draw might be what she needs. Hasabro has been getting beaten out of sight but turned it around last start. Alburq had been racing in great heart until offering nothing last time out.

Trevelyan looks over the odds given he comes off a win and strikes a track and distance he has a great record at. Ocean Treaty will have admirers coming off that Foxy Frida race, and no doubt Superstorm will have a few specking him at odds in the hope he can recapture the form from his glory days.
