The Surround Stakes is a premier Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies, run over 1400m under Set-Weights conditions during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Held annually at Randwick Racecourse, the race boasts a prize pool of $750,000 and serves as a key target for elite fillies during the carnival.
Named after the champion filly Surround, the only three-year-old filly to win the Cox Plate, the race honors her remarkable achievements during the 1976-1977 season. Surround’s legacy includes victories in major races like the VRC Oaks, Caulfield Guineas, and AJC Oaks, cementing her as one of the greatest three-year-old fillies in Australian racing history.
First run in 1979, the Surround Stakes was elevated to Group 1 status in 2018. Originally contested at Warwick Farm, the race moved permanently to Randwick in 2016. It often acts as a starting point for top fillies in Sydney, complementing other Group 1 races such as the Vinery Stud Stakes and the ATC Oaks.
The Surround Stakes is run alongside the Verry Elleegant Stakes as a co-headlining event on a marquee 10-race card. It is part of a progression for fillies, with the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) serving as a key lead-up and the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill often targeted next.
The Surround Stakes is hosted by Randwick Racecourse, continuing its role as a critical race for showcasing Australia’s best three-year-old fillies.
