Following in the footsteps of the VRC Derby in being held at 2500m, the South Australian Derby is held six months later than its Victorian counterpart, allowed the three-year-old’s to be more seasoned for such a gruelling trip.

Over the years, the SA Derby has had a habit of producing a winner that can go onto greater things.

In 2023, we saw 2021 winner Explosive Jack charge away with the Sydney Cup. Russian Camelot won the 2020 SA Derby at just his fifth start, and as a four-year-old he won an Underwood Stakes and placed in the Cox Plate and All Star Mile. We cast our mind back to Mummify and Subzero as SA Derby winners that went onto win a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup respectively.
