Five Diamonds - 1800m, Rosehill R8

The Five Diamonds is the big money race of the day in Sydney, with the five-year-olds running for $2 million under set weights and penalties conditions.

Antino is the favourite, and well he might be. He’s been campaigning in Melbourne this spring, after a Brisbane autumn/winter campaign that saw him win four races on end. Down in “Mexico”, he’s been running extremely well without any luck, and despite winning only one race, some would argue he should have won all four.

He was trapped away on the inside first-up at Flemington, in a ride that saw James Orman get the sack for Blake Shinn. Second-up he was able to salute at Group 3 level as the raging favourite. Third-up he was a nose away from winning the Group 1 Toorak Handicap after drawing 16 of 16, and last start he was help up again and was just shaded by a potential star New Zealand mare. Antino is almost certainly the best horse in this race, and with even luck should be winning.

Democracy Manifest just keeps improving under the handling of Chris Waller. He won a fast Cameron Handicap, beating subsequent Five Diamonds Prelude winner Palmetto, and was one of the runs of the day in the Epsom when making ground on a day and in a race that suited on-pacers. Last time out he was the eye-catcher again from the rear, but we have to admit his racing pattern means he won’t win out of turn.

Detonator Jack hasn’t won this campaign, but in three of his four races he’s gone down by less than half a length against some decent horses, and the form around him has been sound. He looks ready for 1800m now, and as a winner over 2100m he’s proven at the distance in a way that a few other of the main fancies aren’t. Barrier 8 will give Jason Collett some options.

Unspoken is the horse rising through the grades for the Snowden camp, and looks to be peaking for this assignment. He’s now won three in a row this preparation, including last start by a widening four lengths. Admittedly he only had 52kg’s there, and comes up to 56kg’s here, but he couldn’t be in better form, and will surely give you a good shout at a double figure quote.

Palmetto is big odds again, and draws perfectly to pull off another upset. Jimi Hendrix is the unknown quantity, transferred to Annabel Neasham from the UK and having his first run in the country. Hope In Your Heart deserves a win like this, but just doesn’t go as well on the dry as she does with a bit of juice in the track. Waterford draws the widest gate, which is going to make it tough for him.

Golden Gift - 1100m, Rosehill R7

The Golden Gift sees the two-year-old’s running for a million dollars over the Rosehill 1100m, a distance that doesn’t give too many favours to wide barriers – yet most of the main fancies here have drawn out.

Scampi was all the rage in the week leading into the Breeders Plate after trailing brilliantly before his debut, but was the first one beaten after leading the field along. Something had to be amiss, and sure enough he ended up in the stewards report with a slow recovery. Maher & Eustace have elected to keep his prep going, which is a good pointer, and now we’re getting a better price.

Rue De Royale could be the value play from an inside draw, having already had race experience. He was well beaten by Bold Bastille on debut, in what was the win of the season from this two-year-old crop so far, but he’ll be better for the experience. He trailed well with his stablemate Dublin Down before that debut, and we’ve seen that horse win at Flemington on Cup day, while Rue De Royale is here for the big money.

Shangri La Express is the short-priced favourite, after his strong win in the Kirkham on debut, leading all the way. This will be a different assignment from a wide draw if he can’t get across before the first turn, and is posted wide. You’d be brave to take the shorts on offer.

Of the debutants, perhaps Gram might be one to keep an eye out for, especially given the race does shape to have a lot of speed drawn out wide. He was the best closer of the trailers, and could well get the right set up here to finish over the top of them. Barber won this for Godolphin last year with exactly that type of run.

Hot Danish Stakes - 1400m, Rosehill R6

The Hot Danish hasn’t drawn the field Racing NSW would have expected when raising prizemoney to $500,000 for mares to contest a Group 2 over 1400m, with only two acceptors rated higher than 91.

Royal Merchant is one of those two, and looks the one to beat at set weights. She was a Group 1 winner against older horses as three-year-old, and as such carried full penalties in her first two runs this prep. In the last of those, which was The Invitation won by Espiona she was, she was chopped out halfway up the straight, and never got a fair crack at winning the race. She was only beaten two lengths and looked to have more to give. She drops in weight, and class, into this race, and gets the run of the race from gate 4.

Magic Time and Parisal were in The Invitation after running the quinella in the Nivison, with Magic Time finishing alongside Espiona and co. While none of those are here, Call Di is, who ran well behind Magic Time in the Nivison two starts back. She followed that up with a good third in the Tristarc, in a race that has already produced one winner.

Roots is a classy mare who was good first-up, but raced flat second-up in The Invitation. She didn’t do much at all there, but plenty of Chris Waller gallopers perform like that and then peak third-up. If she brings her best she can be a threat to Royal Merchant, but you are being asked to take her a little bit on trust.

Dalchini closed nicely in The Invitation. She’s been at huge odds all three runs this prep, and has run much better than expectation each time. While she is underrated, she’s also stuck on only one win, so it’s hard to be too confident on her chances.

The other three mares in the race aren’t without a hope either. Finepoint goes well first-up, at Rosehill, and 1400m is her pet distance. Mirra View is an honest sort that will race on-pace in a race of little natural speed, so that will keep her in the game for a while. Russian Conquest was back in form last time out, behind a smart one in Gringotts, but still hasn’t won since her two-year-old days.
