The Coast - 1600m, Gosford R8
Half a million dollars is up for grabs in this restricted race over the Gosford mile, another initiative by Racing NSW as they seek to keep quality horses racing in their jurisdiction. It is only open to three- and four-year-old’s.
Welwal carries the significant top weight. He was brought out for the Golden Eagle originally, but was unfortunately given a Frankie Dettori “special” and made no impact in that race. He’s had four runs this preparation, working into his form, and his last two placings in good company say he’s ready to run well here.
Military Expert also got beaten a long way in the Golden Eagle, but prior to that ran top three in the Toorak Handicap. He was seven lengths behind the winner first-up, but has been known to improve drastically second-up. He’ll want to.
Thalassophile is a bonny mare that has been in ripping form with two wins and a second from her last three starts. Even before that, she was in great form through the summer. Chris Waller loves bringing his horses back in distance to contest 1600m races, and she can win doing exactly that here.
Loch Eagle is as talented as any horse in this field, but his very best runs are when ridden completely cold in big fields and surging late, which means his strike rate is very low. Still, he’s worth an each-way play at $17 here.
Palmetto is in form and improving for John Sargent. Pretty Amazing is coming off two wins herself and must be a chance as one of the Waller four. Razeta’s eyes would light up if the track was heavy. We don’t know the ceiling of Kayobi yet either, and Jay Ford will give him every chance from a cushy draw.
