MEMSIE STAKES - 1400m, Caulfield R9
The Memsie Stakes is the first Group 1 of the Victorian racing season, and it has attracted a crack field accordingly. You can easily argue that Mr Brightside, I Wish I Win and Alligator Blood are three of the best five horses in the country.
I Wish I Win heads the market a couple of days out from the race, and racing fans can’t wait to see him unleash his dazzling finishing burst, but drawing gate one can not help him here. There’s no doubt he’ll be doing his best work late, but also that it could come too late if he can’t find clear running.
Mr Brightside has the opposite problem, in that he has to jump from barrier 15, the widest of all runners, with Alligator Blood one inside him. There’s no doubt Tim Clark will push forward quickly on Alligator Blood, to try and tag onto the back of likely leader Annavisto, so Craig Williams will have to decide whether to follow him over – get it wrong and he’s posted three wide with no cover, but if he decides to snag back then he might be back to near last. It’s going to be a fascinating first furlong.
All three horses mentioned are clearly good enough, but the question is which one is likely to get the best chance to win. It might be Alligator Blood.
Annavisto has won her last two first-up runs over 1400m by more than three lengths. They have both been in mares grade at Flemington, but she does like Caulfield too, albeit now has to beat elite WFA talent. She has the talent and speed to do so if left alone in front.
Chris Waller has brought Princess Grace and Osipenko down from Sydney after excellent runs in the Winx Stakes. Princess Grace hit the front at the 150m there, and was just shaded by Fangirl despite being in the worse part of the track. She should get a lovely run here, and is a big chance.
Osipenko was arguably the run of the race in the Winx, with a fast-finishing fifth after drawing wide. He should have won the Caulfield Guineas here last spring if not for a bad draw, and now has gate two. You’d think Mark Zahra will give him the run of the race, and if things don’t quite go to plan for some of the bigger names, he can certainly win.
