Queensland Oaks - 2200m, Eagle Farm R8

The Queensland Oaks often produces a handy filly that can go on to be competitive as an older mare. Winx will always be the standout, of course, but Duais is a more recent example, while the likes of Egg Tart, Youngstar and Eskimo Queen were also more than handy on their day.

This year sees three standout fillies at the top of the market, and a potentially long tail with the fourth favourite around $13 at the time of writing, and more than a handful at $81 or longer.

The Doomben Roses over 2000m is always the key lead-up, and it was taken out in fine style by Fireburn, breaking her Slipper curse in recording her first win since her two-year-old season.

The Gary Portelli-trained filly settled to the rear of the field in a race of solid pace, stuck to the inside when it came time to make her move, and only had to go around two horses in making her winning run. The question is going to be whether she can extend her brilliance to that extra 200m – plenty of horses over the years have looked good at the end of 2000m but not been able to go a yard further.

Renaissance Woman looked the winner at the 200m of The Roses, having enjoyed a beautiful run in transit, but was no match for Fireburn’s acceleration in the final stages. She looks to be a bit more dour than her key rival, might be better suited over extra ground, and has also drawn the most favourably of those in the betting.

The market suggests that anything else from that race is going to have a difficult task to turn the tables on the quinella, but Sakura Girl shouldn’t be overlooked.

She set a strong tempo in setting the race up for the swoopers, and she was the only on-pace runner left standing at the end, going down swinging by a length and a half into third. This horse did jump favourite in the New Zealand Oaks won by ATC Oaks winner Pennyweka, but went too hard in front, and she could spring a surprise.

The lightly-raced Cheval D’or also brings Kiwi form to the race, having won at 2100m over the ditch last time out. She was only a couple of lengths behind Sakura Girl at only her fourth race start, and is learning what it is all about each time.

Affaire A Suivre hits this race off three wins on the bounce, including the Australasian Oaks last start. That Oaks is run at 2000m rather than 2200m, so she only has to find an extra furlong, but the Adelaide form didn’t stand up in the Derby last week. Ciaron Maher and David Eustace will of course have her perfectly prepared.

Some main fancies have drawn wide here, which will add complexity to the race, and some hard decisions will need to be made early by the jockeys on board.

Magic Millions National Classic - 1600m, Eagle Farm R5

The Magic Millions National Classic gives the mares their chance to contest a 1600m race at level weights, meaning the class should rise to the top.

Foxy Frida has been in fantastic form all preparation, and has been beautifully placed in races such as this one, where she is well treated at the weights.

While she is a super mare at all times, as evidenced by the fact she has been in the quinella 15 times from 24 starts, she excels in autumn-winter. At this time of year, her record is 13: 7-4-0, and she looks well placed to add to that record here.

Chris Waller is attacking the race in numbers, saddling up five runners.

Kiku is a classy customer, having won this race last year, but has tended to produce her best on the fresh side, while she is only two weeks between runs here. Thalassophile was good last start in the Lord Mayors Cup at Rosehill, but gave up too big a start to her stablemate.

Frumos won the Pam O’Neill Stakes last start, beating a handful of rivals here. Pretty Amazing meets Frumos 2kg’s better at the weights for a two length defeat and didn’t meet many favours there. Those two have effectively swapped barriers here, and we know how often a Waller roughie upsets more fancied stablemates.

Princess Rhaenys was a flashing light second in the O’Neill, also benefits from a kinder gate than she’s had all prep, and can make her presence felt.

There is very little speed on paper here, which opens the door for a rider to take control of the race, and it may well become a tactical affair.

The Moreton Cup - 1200m, Eagle Farm R7

The Moreton Cup is the feature sprint race of the day, held under the set-weights and penalties format, and it has attracted some nice horses.

Quantico is the favourite, with punters trying to get their money back after he was a good thing licked last start in the Ortensia Stakes at Scone. He just couldn’t get a crack at them after Jason Collett didn’t navigate his way out of traffic in time, before surging late to just miss on the line. He’s drawn to get clear air this time around, and has James McDonald for company.

Prince of Boom will be hardest to beat, dropping back in grade after tackling the A-graders so far this prep. His form around Giga Kick, Overpass, Rothfire and King of Sparta is hard to ignore for a race like this. He’ll either lead or take a sit behind Frosty Rocks.

All of Baller, Gravina, Far Too Easy and Clemenceau will have admirers too. Baller is more suited here than against the absolute elite. Gravina is as honest as the day is long and gets a weight swing on Quantico from their last meeting. Four-year-old Far Too Easy isn’t done improving yet. Clemenceau is overrated, and this is harder than what he’s been contesting recently.

Queensland Day Stakes - 1200m, Eagle Farm R9

The Queensland Day Stakes draws the three-year-old’s together at set weights over the 1200m course, as a last chance saloon for any hoping to get into the Stradbroke that might not already be qualified.

The market has identified two key chances in the race, Golden Boom from the Tony Gollan stable and Red Card for James Cummings and Godolphin.

Golden Boom has only tasted defeat once, when caught wide first-up this prep in what was one of the runs of the day. He atoned last start, but perhaps didn’t put the field away as might have been expected of an odds-on pop. From a kind draw and on-speed position, we’ll get to see what he’s made of here.

Red Card was an eye-catching winner at Scone last time out, putting a good margin on the field, but there is a question over the depth of the race. The placings were filled by a maiden winner and another filly that is stuck on one win from 18 months ago. Let’s see her do it again before jumping into short odds.

The iron filly Lada Laguna goes in everything given how well she is performing week in, week out. Brereton creates interest coming off a decent first-up run behind smart older horses, especially given his run behind Giga Kick in the spring doesn’t read too badly for this. Russian Conquest was plain last start, but might benefit from a wide draw and colder ride.
