WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FINAL - 1600m, Flemington R8

Winter Championship Final day at Flemington is always as good an off-season meeting as you can get, and this year’s fields haven’t let us down with good depth and quality across the card, and some excellent betting races.

Charterhouse heads up the betting in the Winter Championship, albeit on the each-way cut, and it’s hard to resist his claims after only one run in the country for the Maher/Eustace stable.

Bringing some black type mile form over from Europe, he settled back last after drawing wide at 1400m first-up at Flemington, and hit the line like the classy horse he appears to be for third. He’s drawn wide again, but in a race that will have a genuine tempo due to Keats and the long Flemington straight to make his mark, we’ll be able to see what he can do over his preferred 1600m.

Keats may well be the one to beat, given that despite a few horses that like to sit handy, he will have the out-and-out lead uncontested. His form has been consistent all year carrying bigger weights for the most part, so he’ll be hard to catch with only 54.5kg’s on his back.

Jimmy The Bear is ever consistent, and won’t be out of a place in a Toorak Handicap later in the year so is up to winning this. He split King Magnus and Charterhouse in their lead-up race, meets them both better at the weights, and has drawn to get a lovely midfield run.

King Magnus has the full 60kg’s to carry, but is in outstanding form and is just so genuine you can’t leave him out. Maher and Eustace could have a say with Unusual Culture and Junipal too. The former is the classic stable galloper that holds his form and keeps winning, while the latter was excellent first-up after a year off the scene, and has proven he is more than up to this level in the past.

SPRINT SERIES FINAL - 1200m, Flemington R7

The feature sprint of the day has a few up-and-comers trying to get some black type, along with a couple that have been around the traps.

Sigh is starting to make an impression, with five wins from eight career starts including two in a row to start this campaign, both of which have been down the Flemington straight. She claimed some handy scalps in open company last time out, but now has to prove herself at 1200m, which is a box she’s yet to tick.

Yulong Storm looks a nice each-way play at big odds, having been in the form of his life the last two months. He ran Sigh to just over a length back in May, and meets her 4.5kg’s better here. Since then he’s run second to the handy Senegalia, won a good race in the Golden Topaz, and has twice won down the straight six across his career.

It’sourtime is always in the mix for races at this level, and seldom runs poorly. He was tested out to 1400m last time, but is much better suited to 1200m and is a straight track specialist.

Pizarro brings a whole new look to the race, coming down from Sydney for John O’Shea. His second to Think About It a few months ago certainly leaps off the page, but he often leaves himself a bit to do. The straight might bring out his best, as it often has for a horse north of the border.

Invincible Caviar will have her admirers if it’s a good track, and Nicolini Vito is more than capable of winning this if he’s been set for the race by the Hayes brothers.

CRESWICK STAKES - 1200m, Flemington R5

The Creswick Stakes sees the three-year-old’s tackling the Flemington 1200m, and Godolphin appears to have the whip hand with Renosu and Legio Ten strong in the market.

Renosu is probably the class sprinter of the field, and was at his best when splitting the highly touted What You Need and Benedetta here back in March. This is his first attempt at 1200m though, which is something of a concern.

Legio Ten has come along in leaps and bounds since breaking his maiden at Hawkesbury in November, and obviously matured nicely in his spell afterwards. His two wins this prep have been full of style, but he does have to come up 5kg’s while also stepping up in class here.

Extratwo won her maiden by six lengths at Kyneton, and then came straight to Saturday grade, albeit benchmark 78, and won in fine style again. Her progression over the last couple of months has to be taken seriously, especially if she is not done improving yet.

Tijuana is an interesting runner, winner of the Stutt Stakes and beaten less than a length in the Caulfield Guineas, he failed in the Magic Millions in January and was immediately tipped out. He’s first-up here and has the class, but the market will tell us if he’s there to win.

TAJ ROSSI SERIES FINAL - 1600m, Flemington R3

This race sees the two-year-old’s tackling the Flemington mile, and many punters across the nation will be using Steparty as their multi anchor here.

The Paul Preusker juvenile has won the first three starts of his career, by an average of two lengths, and hasn’t had an opponent lay a glove on him yet. He puts himself in the race, and has drawn perfectly to do so again, but now has to do it at 1600m for the first time.

African Pioneer might be the one to add a bit of value to the exacta. He was very good on debut behind Blazing Harry, which is the horse that ran second to Steparty two weeks ago – he should have taken great benefit from the experience and can be expected to improve.

Line ‘Em Up Louie relished the wet ground at Swan Hill last start, and might have something to offer. Sunsource has been 5-6 lengths behind Steparty at his last two, but is perhaps looking for a mile trip now.

MAHOGANY CHALLENGE FINAL - 2500m, Flemington R6

The three-year-old stayers get their chance here, over the VRC Derby distance of 2500m.

First Immortal has to give at least 4kg’s to the entire field here, but the weighty impost is offset by the on-fire Blake Shinn steering him from barrier one. There is no more important start in the country to draw well for than the 2500m at Flemington, and he will enjoy saving every penny. His form apart from one misfire has been rock solid.

If First Immortal is the right formline, then My Brothers Keeper must be in the reckoning too. He meets his rival 4kg’s better for a two length defeat, and he’s certainly bred to enjoy the step up from 2000m to 2500m. He’s been building nicely and could be ready to strike now.

Whakamana took on Group company against her fellow fillies in Adelaide, and ran well without ever really threatening. She got her rewards in a mid-weeker at Sandown, winning well while never in doubt. My Brothers Keeper did have her measure back in April, and gets a weight advantage from that clash too.

Verifier is also coming off a last start win, and we know Nigel Blackiston has an affinity for getting the best out of a young stayer. My Brothers Keeper is again the form throughline here, and once again gets what should be a key weight advantage from when they met here a month ago.
