WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FINAL - 1600m, Flemington R8
Winter Championship Final day at Flemington is always as good an off-season meeting as you can get, and this year’s fields haven’t let us down with good depth and quality across the card, and some excellent betting races.
Charterhouse heads up the betting in the Winter Championship, albeit on the each-way cut, and it’s hard to resist his claims after only one run in the country for the Maher/Eustace stable.
Bringing some black type mile form over from Europe, he settled back last after drawing wide at 1400m first-up at Flemington, and hit the line like the classy horse he appears to be for third. He’s drawn wide again, but in a race that will have a genuine tempo due to Keats and the long Flemington straight to make his mark, we’ll be able to see what he can do over his preferred 1600m.
Keats may well be the one to beat, given that despite a few horses that like to sit handy, he will have the out-and-out lead uncontested. His form has been consistent all year carrying bigger weights for the most part, so he’ll be hard to catch with only 54.5kg’s on his back.
Jimmy The Bear is ever consistent, and won’t be out of a place in a Toorak Handicap later in the year so is up to winning this. He split King Magnus and Charterhouse in their lead-up race, meets them both better at the weights, and has drawn to get a lovely midfield run.
King Magnus has the full 60kg’s to carry, but is in outstanding form and is just so genuine you can’t leave him out. Maher and Eustace could have a say with Unusual Culture and Junipal too. The former is the classic stable galloper that holds his form and keeps winning, while the latter was excellent first-up after a year off the scene, and has proven he is more than up to this level in the past.
