The Australian Guineas is a premier Group 1 race for three-year-olds, held over 1600 meters (mile) under Set-Weights conditions. Taking place annually at the iconic Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, it features a prize pool of $1 million. This race is regarded as one of the key events for three-year-olds on the Australian racing calendar, alongside other notable races like the Golden Rose Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, and Randwick Guineas.
First run in 1986 as a Group 3 event, the Australian Guineas quickly elevated to Group 1 status in 1987. Except for a brief period (1998-2000) when the distance was extended to 2000 meters and a one-off relocation to Caulfield in 1997 due to Flemington renovations, the race has been consistently run at its current distance.
In 2025, the Australian Guineas will take place on March 1 at Flemington Racecourse. A scheduling clash with the Randwick Guineas, which shares similar conditions, often divides attention during this period, highlighting the competition among top three-year-olds.
