The Sires is the third leg of Sydney’s Triple Crown for two-year-old’s. The Triple Crown has been won twice this century, with Dance Hero in 2004 and Pierro in 2012.
The Randwick 1600m asks the juveniles to race an extra furlong more than they did in the Sires Produce Stakes, with most of the field traditionally stepping up to that distance for the first time.
The Golden Slipper and Sires Produce formlines are usually to the fore of favouritism for the Champagne Stakes. Look for horses that are running on well in both of those previous races, and that are perhaps bred to be better at the longer trip.
The Sires over 1400m a fortnight ago must always be the starting point for this race, although this year there are only four runners from it. A layer of complexity is added though, given The Sires was run on a deeply heavy track, while we should see a good surface on Saturday.
Militarize wasn’t fancied in the Golden Slipper, and copped a check that put him out of commission anyway, but he thrived on wet ground over seven furlongs in The Sires to win going away. He’s bred to get even further still, so can be trusted to see out the mile.
Sometimes racing is simple, and this might be one. It could very well start and end with Militarize. Chris Waller is always extremely patient and conservative with his two-year-old’s. The fact that Militarize is contesting these big races, let alone still going with this preparation, is all the pointer we need.
Can Don Corleone (second in the Sires), Pier Pressure (third) or Bases Loaded (fifth) turn the tables from behind Militarize in the key lead-up?
Drier ground might be the key to Don Corleone, but there are question marks over his stamina and breeding for 1600m. Bases Loaded doesn’t strike as a mile horse either.
Pier Pressure is yet to win a race but shapes like she’ll keep coming and is bred to be a miler given she is by a Caulfield Guineas winner out of a Pierro mare.
Tom Kitten and Amur might be lesser chances, but you can never underestimate James Cummings and his Godolphin team in these big races.
