The Moir Stakes serves as both the first Moonee Valley Group 1 and also the first pure sprinting Group 1 in Australia, in any racing season. While it does have Manikato and Schillaci on the honour roll from the 80s and 90s, it has particularly come into its own since the turn of the century, with champions like Miss Andretti, Apache Cat, Black Caviar (twice), Buffering (three times) and Nature Strip all winning this race.
In very recent years, the capacity for the Moir field to be a lead-in to The Everest, especially if there are any slot-holders that haven’t yet secured a horse and want a find a classy, in-form galloper that can perform under WFA conditions – although it must be said, 1000m around the Valley is a very different prospect to 1200m at Randwick.
It’s impossible to tip against the star New Zealand mare Imperatriz, especially given her last two starts have been wins at Moonee Valley, in track record time in the McEwen Stakes, and at Group 1 level in the William Reid. She has won 14 of her 20 starts, five of them at the highest level.
Imperatriz has drawn to stalk the hot speed, to be set by Acromantula and Zoustyle along with Asfoora, Rothfire and Generation, and she should be able to power over the top.
Rothfire is just so consistent in these sprint races, and is forever knocking on the door but finding one or two better. Asfoora has always threatened to win at Group 1 level, and was scintillating first-up at Caulfield. Uncommon James was an outstanding winner of the Oakleigh Plate in February, and a repeat of that performance would give Imperatriz something to think about.
