The Queen of the Turf is one of two Group 1 races in Australia that pits fillies and mares against each other under weight-for-age conditions at 1600m, alongside the Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington in cup week.
Horses meeting at level weights on the big days should advantage the punter, given the form is well exposed and we’ve usually seen them race against each other at various stages. However, the Queen of the Turf often throws up a roughie, which goes to show there isn’t always a lot between the classiest mares in the country, and the right run combined with luck on the day is what wins out.
Alcohol Free is a firm favourite in the early markets – she’s an ex-European mare about to make her Australian debut, a four time Group 1 winner that has form around the best there is, and James McDonald is jumping on board. She’s high class, but the history of this race says it often pays to bet around the favourites.
Looking at horse in double figures, Fangirl may well be the one to beat if conditions are dry given her form around Anamoe. Hinged is always a chance in these races, and unlike stablemate Fangirl she will relish a wet track. Atishu has a big watch on her now that she seems to be putting it all together as a five-year-old mare – her first-up run was enormous, and she is primed for a big one.
Don’t be afraid to back your judgement if you like something at a price.
There should be quite a bit of natural speed in the race, which means every mare should get their chance and it could be that those settling midfield or even worse are the ones to beat. Of course, Sydney weather and the track pattern on the day will have a large say.
Sirileo Miss has been taking all before her in Melbourne, running her rivals ragged from the front. Pride of Jenni’s best performances have been when she can dictate. Mirra Vision and Hinged are also horses that have performed very well taking up a prominent position.
Alcohol Free will likely not be far away, especially if McDonald decides to ride her like the best horse and take bad luck out of the equation.
So who might be best placed to storm over the top of them, if they do go too hard? Levante came from last in the George Ryder to be beaten less than a length by Anamoe, and she is unbeaten on soft ground. Atishu handles all going, and might be able to cut the corner from barrier one while scything through the field. Hope in Your Heart is just so genuine, and it might be her time.
