The Randwick Guineas is a prestigious Group 1 race for three-year-olds, contested over 1600m under Set-Weights conditions during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Held annually at Randwick Racecourse, the race offers a total prize pool of $1 million and is one of the key mile races for three-year-olds in Australia.
Originally known as the Canterbury Guineas and run over 1900m at Canterbury Racecourse, the race was rebranded and relocated to Randwick in 2006 as part of a significant revamp of the NSW Autumn Carnival. It now forms the first leg of Sydney’s three-year-old “Triple Crown,” alongside the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Australian Derby (2400m). Completing the Triple Crown is a rare feat, achieved by only five horses, including It’s a Dundeel (2013) and Octagonal (1996).
The Randwick Guineas often features as the highlight of its race day, alongside the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes. It is a pivotal lead-up to longer distance features and a true test of class and stamina for elite three-year-olds.
Held at Randwick Racecourse, the Randwick Guineas often competes for attention with the Australian Guineas at Flemington, as both races are run under similar conditions for three-year-olds over a mile.
