The Ranvet Stakes is a prestigious Group 1 race run over 2000m under Weight-For-Age (WFA) conditions at Rosehill Racecourse during Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival. Open to horses aged three years and older, the race offers a prize pool of $1 million and is one of five Group 1 events on Golden Slipper Day, alongside the Golden Slipper, George Ryder Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, and The Galaxy.
First run in 1902 as the Rawson Stakes, named after then-New South Wales governor Sir Harry Rawson, the race was renamed the Ranvet Stakes nearly 30 years ago in recognition of its long-term sponsor. Originally contested over varying distances, it has been run at its current 2000 metres since the 1970s and achieved Group 1 status in 1980. In 2022, the prize money was increased from $700,000 to $1 million as part of Racing NSW’s prize money initiative.
Historically, the Ranvet Stakes has favored older horses, with three-year-olds having a relatively poor record. It is a key middle-distance event and often attracts high-caliber contenders aiming for further autumn features.
