The H E Tancred Stakes is a prestigious Group 1 staying race run over 2400 metres under Weight-For-Age (WFA) conditions at Rosehill Racecourse during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. With a prize pool of $1.5 million, it is Australia’s only Group 1 WFA event at this distance, making it a premier test of stamina for horses aged three years and older.
First held in 1963 and won by Maidenhead, the race was named after Henry Eugene Tancred, a former chairman of the Sydney Turf Club. Apart from a one-time change to 2000 metres in 1964, it has always been run over 2400 metres. It gained Group 1 status in 1980 and is recognised as one of the most significant staying races in Australia, second only to the Golden Slipper in prestige at the Rosehill leg of the carnival.
The Tancred Stakes shares its race day with the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), serving as the co-main event. The winner gains ballot exemption for two of Sydney’s biggest autumn races: the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Sydney Cup, run over two miles during The Championships.
Historically, the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) has been a key lead-up race for the Tancred Stakes.
