The Galaxy is a prestigious Group 1 sprint race run over 1100m under handicap conditions during Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival. Held annually at Rosehill Racecourse, it offers a prize pool of $1 million and is one of five Group 1 features on Golden Slipper Day, alongside the Golden Slipper, Rosehill Guineas, George Ryder Stakes, and Ranvet Stakes.
First run in 1972 and won by Playbill, The Galaxy was initially a Listed race before being upgraded to Group 2 in 1980 and achieving Group 1 status in 1984. Previously held at Randwick, the race moved to Rosehill in 2013, becoming a staple of the carnival. The Galaxy serves as a key lead-up to the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes during The Championships, attracting elite sprinters from across the country.
The race has a storied honor roll, featuring champions like Bletchingly (1975), Luskin Star (1978), and Schillaci (1992), each of whom left a significant mark on Australian racing. Recent prize money increases in 2022 further solidified its importance on the racing calendar.
The Galaxy generally provides a competitive field, though historically, favorites and top-weighted runners have struggled in this open and challenging sprint. The race continues to be a highlight of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, showcasing the best sprinting talent in Australia.
