The Goodwood has long been regarded as South Australia’s marquee race, to sit the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane and the Railway Stakes in Perth as the highlight’s of Group 1 racing outside Victoria and New South Wales.

It has always been a target race for canny interstate trainers, mostly from Victoria, who may have an up-and-comer on the rise or a second-tier sprinter looking to add a Group 1 sprint to their resume.

The highlight of the Goodwood this century, if not throughout the 140 year history of the race, was the four year period when Takeover Target (2009) and Black Caviar (2012) both graced the Morphettville turf. Takeover Target had already won at Royal Ascot a few years prior, while for Black Caviar The Goodwood was her last race before going on to do so.
