The Verry Elleegant Stakes, formerly the Chipping Norton Stakes, is a prestigious Group 1 race run over 1600m under weight-for-age (WFA) conditions for horses aged three years and older. It is a key event of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, held annually at Randwick Racecourse, with a prize pool of $1 million.
First run in 1925, the race has a storied history, featuring legendary winners such as Phar Lap, Tulloch, and Winx, who won the race four consecutive times (2016-2019). The race has undergone several changes over the years, including adjustments to its distance and status, finally settling at its current format in 1980 and attaining Group 1 status in 1986.
Renamed in 2024 to honor the exceptional achievements of champion mare Verry Elleegant, the race is a critical lead-up to major autumn features such as the Doncaster Mile (providing a ballot exemption for the winner), the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Sydney Cup.
The Verry Elleegant Stakes headlines a 10-race card alongside the Group 1 Surround Stakes, making it one of the marquee events of the Australian racing calendar.
