STABLE MAIL
13 APRIL 2023

In what may have very well been a first for the stable, we were to saddle up runners in five states on Saturday.  With both runners being withdrawn from Eagle Farm, we instead look to Royal Randwick, down to Sandown Lakeside and over to Morphettville, where we have several live chances, before we turn our attention to the west where Bella Nipotina lines up in the inaugural running of the $4m Quokka at Ascot.

Randwick Runners

RACE 1Frank Packer Plate, 2000m

5. Ain't He Grand | J: Tom Marquand

Returns here third up after a pleasing run in the G2 Tulloch Stakes, finishing a length off the winner in a race that rated five lengths above average for the class. He stays at the 2000m here, although he’s still developing mentally and physically. We see My Truth leading in what will be a small field, which can often be tactical affairs. Tom Marquand is a strong jockey who’ll suit here and we'll look to have him just off the pace, giving the favourites something to catch. If they go slow, it could be anyone’s to win including our boy, though it is tough to tip against the more fancied runners.

DANGERS: 1. OSPIENKO, 3. PERICLES

RACE 6JRA Plate, 2000m

11. Cadre Du Noir | J: Brenton Avdulla

Put a line through his last start in the G3 Neville Sellwood Stakes, where we found the back of the only tiring runner in a slowly run race. He’ll enjoy the 2000m and if the forecast rain comes, he’ll relish the softer going. We’ll look to push forward from wide gate and sit somewhere behind stablemate, Pride of Jenni. Beyond that, it’s a watch and see for us.

DANGERS: 4. PROTAGONIST, 7. DIAMIL, 2. SUNSHINE RISING

12. Pride Of Jenni | J: Regan Bayliss

This girl likes to jump, and she likes to run. We saw that two starts back in the Coolmore Classic where she rattled home some incredible closing sectionals after setting a red-hot tempo. We think there were excuses last start in the Queen of the Turf with the sticky Randwick track and a softer tempo (albeit still above average) allowing the pack to work into the race. She’ll again jump and look to control proceedings here. First time at the 2000m will see her needing some cheap sectionals, and we may get these with not a lot of speed on paper.

RACE 10Catanach's Jewellers Handicap, 1200m

8. Easy Single | J: Jason Collett

Heads back to the races for his second start this prep, after being a little run off his feet over the 1000m first up at Flemington. The 1200m here will afford him an easier time in running, which should see him finish off his race like we know he can. We see The Face leading the field, with Easy Single pushing up to find a position on speed. Jason Collett has had success on him in the past and will have a fit horse to take him into the race.

Sandown Lakeside Runners

RACE 1Surewise VOBIS Gold Heath, 2100m

3. Wil John | J: Ben Allen

Here for a 2100m pipe-opener with an extended jumps campaign ahead. From barrier 8, Ben Allen will ride him where he’s comfortable, likely to be midfield. There isn’t a lot of depth here with the ratings falling away outside the top three in the weights. Though he’s unlikely to have the turn of foot of the two prominent in the market, he may just sneak a place.

RACE 3Paulele VOBIS Gold Dash, 1200M

1. El Padrino | J: Michael Dee

Resumes with Mick Dee to ride after a freshen and three jump outs. He’s been set for this race for some time and has galloped well in preparation. In saying that, and despite winning first up on a heavy track previously, he’ll need a dry surface to show his best, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the weather before making a call on running him. If he does step out, he’s drawn favourably to sit a pair back, with good speed in an open race with a breadth of different formlines.

13. Fly Nice | J: Dean Holland

Returns second up here after a frustrating watch last start, where she was void of clear air until the 150m. Her work has been very pleasing since then, and we plan for her to head forward from barrier 4, parking just behind the leaders in a race with good speed. We think she’s over the odds and would be plenty shorter had she been given a crack at them last start. To boot, she’ll run out the 1200m and gets through the heavy going, should the rain come.

RACE 9ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap, 1400M

12. Flash Flood | J: Ms Carleen Hefel

Put a line through last start. He raced wide without cover and was steadied in the concluding stages to avoid heels. He is a good worker and his gallops in the lead up to this have been no different. Carleen Hefel knows him well and from barrier 12, which may improve with scratchings, he’s a fit and well horse who will push forward in an open race with plenty of runners out of form.

Morphetville Runners

RACE 8Port Adelaide Guineas, 1800m

13. Running On Time | J: Ms Jessica Eaton

We were really impressed with her last start performance in the Alister Clark Stakes, finishing under 2L off the winner despite going around at $101. Having laid in under pressure toward the heels of another runner in the final 100m, she was probably entitled to finish even closer. After careful consideration of the fields, we’ve elected to head here instead of the Auraria Stakes. Back to 1800m, we hope to have her jump positively with Jess Eaton pushing up to sit outside the leader.

14. Affaire A Suivre | J: John Allen

It was an impressive win last start, where she was able to weave a passage from a sticky gate, letting down nicely to put most of the field away in a few bounds. From barrier 3, Johnny Allen will try to ride her where she’s comfortable, though we fear she made need some luck again here if found midfield and on the rail, in a race likely to be run at only an even tempo.

RACE 9Auraria Stakes, 1800m

6. Jennilala | J: Declan Bates

Stepping out in a G2 over 1400m, then a BM64 over 1300m, up to an 1800m Stakes race may look a tad unconventional on paper, but we’re backing our data here, which suggests she can get to the longer trip. She’s a clean-winded horse with a good action, who has worked very well in the lead up to this race. From barrier 15, Declan Bates will look to have her midfield with cover.

RACE 8The Quokka, 1200m

10. Bella Nipotina | J: Ben Melham

A Queen of the stable, she has enjoyed her 10 days in Perth after an impressive runner up performance in the G1 William Reid Stakes on the tight Mooney Valley circuit. Despite not appreciating the firm going there, she rattled off the second-best last 800 metres of the meeting, going down a length to a pretty good one in Imperatriz. From barrier 6 here, Ben Melham will hope to have her midfield with cover, with the key danger Amelia’s Jewel spotting her a length a pair back. We’ve not sent her to WA for a holiday, and expect her to be in the finish.
